Jaguar Land Rover cars to get automatic doors

As you probably know, the latest Jaguar I-Pace and Range Rover Velar feature ‘hidden’ door grips that slide out electronically once the car owner comes within the opening range. Apparently, someone in Jaguar Land Rover decided that idea could use further development. The company is currently testing a Range Rover Sport with completely automatic doors.

According to JLR, the new feature will be primarily useful to people with disabilities. The principle behind it sounds simple enough: when the owner approaches his/her car, it reads his/her wireless key and swings the driver’s door open. The door can then be closed with a push of a button overhead.

Owners will be able to use the infotainment system to specify which doors will open/close automatically and which will not. Before opening, special proximity sensors will ensure there are no obstacles like poles or trees in range that can damage the door.

Jaguar Land Rover provided no estimates on just when it is going to implement the new feature.
