Reports: Range Rover Sport SVR to get a BMW engine

Land Rover is getting ready to unveil the new Range Rover Sport. According to Autocar, the SUV will debut with BMW engines in the lineup, much like the Range Rover flagship.

This mainly concerns the range-topping SVR spec, which is expected to rival the BMW X6 M Competition in terms of raw power: the latter makes 625 PS (616 hp / 460 kW). As a result, the SVR should be able to go 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in four seconds or so.

The new engine would enable the British marque to take hold in the SUV and crossover market, which has exploded since the latest-gen Range Rover went on sale. The current SVR spec uses a V8 rated at 575 PS (567 hp / 423 kW) and needs 4.5 seconds for the launch.

Lower specs will likely ship with inline-six engines outfitted with 48V starter-generators. A plug-in hybrid version is not out of the question, either. Moving to a new platform and a chassis with 1.5 times the structural strength should also help.

Launch dates for the assorted Range Rover variants remain unannounced, but it is begin officially referred to as a model year 2023 car, so the wait should be over soon.
