A Land Rover with royal heritage heads to auction in the UK

A 1953 Land Rover Series I, numbered 11 in the original production batch of 15 units, will go on sale in Great Britain in late February 2023. The car is expected to fetch between £100,000 and £150,000 thanks to its links to the royal family.

Specifically, the off-roader was custom-made for George VI. It was also used by Elizabeth II, Prince Philipp and Prince Charles, as evidenced by a number of surviving historical photos. The family kept the vehicle until 1966 when it sold it into private hands.

The current owner and seller says the car has around 53,500 miles under its belt to show for being seven decades old. Like all earlier examples, it features a ladder-frame construction with axles suspended on leaf springs.  The whole bodywork is military-grade aluminum. A 1.6-liter engine under the hood links to the wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case.
