Lexus unveils a self-driving concept EV

The Lexus LF-30 Electrified Concept depicted here may not be ready for production, but it should provide you with an idea of what the luxury car marque imagines its vehicles looking like in 2030.

Being 5,090 millimeters (16.7 feet) long, the partly self-driving electric coupe boasts a longer wheelbase (3,200 mm / 10.5 feet) than the current Lexus LS (3,125 mm / 10.25 feet). It sports many elements typical of modern concept cars, such as the large gull-wing doors, the folding steering wheel, the dashboard composed of numerous displays, etc. Perhaps the main highlight comes in the shape of the smart glass roof, which Lexus calls the SkyGate. Rear passengers may use it as a sensor-enabled HUD display capable of streaming video or providing navigation hints.

The cabin houses four seats and boasts a deluxe finish with natural wood inserts and recycled materials used throughout. Mark Levinson provides the audio system, which features compact speakers built into the headrests and supports active noise cancelling.

The concept car comes powered by four motorized wheels joining their efforts for 544 hp (406 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. Despite weighing in at 2.4 metric tons (5,300 lbs), the coupe hits 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill in 3.8 seconds and maxes out at 200 km/h (124 mph). A 110-kWh battery enables it to cover at least 500 kilometers (310 miles) on a single charge.

The car has a wireless charging device located under its rear bumper, which you can use in conjunction with the corded charger to automatically top it up while parked in the garage. The corded charger supports up to 150 kW.

All steering occurs ‘by wire’, which means no direct connection exists between the steering wheel and the axles.

While it is official that the Lexus LF-30 Electrified Concept will never reach production in its current form, it will nevertheless provide the design and tech basis for many upcoming Lexus EVs. The first of these – a compact-sized hatchback – will debut in November. A few more models based on a new EV-specific platform will follow in 2020, and the marque expects 100% electrification of its range by 2025.
