Lexus showed us its LF-1 Limitless Concept at the NAIAS expo three years ago (look inside our gallery and watch the video for a reminder), but the production car never followed. The reveal had been planned for this year, but reports are now coming in that it will not happen until 2023.
The issue is allegedly in the need to design an efficient new twin-turbo V8 from scratch for the marque’s largest SUV. Lexus has given no official comment on this point, but it would be logical for the LF to ship in several drivetrain versions. One of these could consist of a 3.5-liter V6 and an electric motor jointly rated at 360 PS (355 hp / 265 kW). However, competing with other full-size SUVs on the market would necessitate something much more powerful, like a twin-turbo V8 with four liters of displacement.
Having said that, Covid-related disruption of logistics and manufacturing processes could also play a role in pushing back the production timeframe.
In all likelihood, the Lexus LF will utilize the TNGA-L platform, have a unitized body, and be around 5,250 mm (17.22 feet) long. The rest remains a mystery at this point.
