Lexus GS to make a comeback as a hydrogen car

Lexus took its RWD sedan, the GS, off the production schedule last year, but reports are now coming in that the model will be returning with a Toyota Mirai fuel cell powertrain under the hood.

According to Australian car magazine Drive, the new GS will be based on the TNGA-N platform and will inherit the entire second-gen Mirai powertrain. Lexus has refrained from commenting so far, but such a decision would align very well with the full-scale electrification program the carmaker has announced before.

The purported hydrogen-powered Lexus GS may go on sale in the USA and Asia, possibly under a different model name. Drive claims the announcement will likely be made in 2022, although no prototyped fitting the description have so far been sighted testing on public roads.

As for the Toyota Mirai, it went into its second generation in 2020, gaining RWD, more thrust from an improved electric motor, and more range (approx. 650 km / 400 miles).
