Video: 370,000-km Lexus GX470 gets a reasonably priced full makeover

Restoring high-mileage cars can be risky because you need to check every single part for wear, including parts that don’t wear out quickly. On the other hand, going the safe way by restoring everything is prohibitively expensive. Where is the sweet spot? We assume this Lexus GX470 comes close enough.

Despite being only 16 years old, the crossover has put behind nearly 370,000 kilometers (229,000 miles). It performed very well and was always a faithful companion for the driver, who decided to try and get it overhauled instead of buying a new one. The whole endeavor cost him around $24,000.

Repairing the drivetrain using OEM and aftermarket components cost $7,850. This included installing a new throttle body, a cold air intake system, and a cat-back exhaust system. The engine received new timing chains and a fresh battery, while the steering wheel ended up with a better power steering pump.

Major changes were made to the suspension as well, with the upper and lower arms replaced alongside bushings, joints and air cushions in the back. The owner opted for coilovers for the rear axle, arguing that they would serve for longer.

Finally, the cabin also enjoyed a complete makeover with the seats refilled and retrimmed, the wheel replaced with a Land Cruiser Prado counterpart and Piano Black accents added throughout. Replacements inside included the dash panel, center console trim, handbrake grip and transmission lever knob.

Spending $24,000 on a car this worn may seem like a waste, but it seems like the repairs were all properly performed and the GX470 started handling like new – if not better. Watch the full 18-minute video if you are interested in seeing how such restoration projects are usually performed.
