Lexus patents new RX versions years ahead of launch

The Lexus RX isn’t coming to the market until at least 2022, but the manufacturer has already patented its various specs. Let us see what is coming up, shall we?

The company has claimed trademark rights for the RX350h, RX450h+ and RX500h designations in a number of countries. The letter ‘h’ usually means ‘hybrid’, while the plus sign denotes PHEV variants. Japanese media are reporting that the RX350h will be getting the THS II powertrain based around a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine. The RX450h+ will allegedly ship with the same innards as the Toyota RAV4 PHEV, while the RX500h will come with a 3.5-liter V6 under the hood.

The current RX generation is five years old and received its mid-life refresh last year (see the gallery and the video). The SUVs ship in five- and seven-seat variants and max out at the RX450h spec, which uses a 3.5-liter gasoline V6 assisted by an electric motor.
