Lexus getting a hybrid and an EV ready for the launch

According to Lexus, its total electrified car sales finally exceeded 2,000,000 units late last month. It took the Japanese premium car marque over 15 years to get there since revealing its first hybrid, the RX400h, back in 2005.

The RX remains a sales hit among Lexus hybrids, being responsible for 518,000 sold Lexus hybrids or more than a quarter of the total. The ES comes second with 384,000 units, the CT third with 372,000, and the NX fourth with 285,000.

As for the marque’s first full electric car – the UX 300e – it was counted together with its hybrid counterpart at 137,000 total units sold, making it hard to judge how many buyers decided to go all-electric. The electrified IS, LC, LS, RC and other models summed up to another 324,000 units.

In 2020, nature-friendly vehicles constituted a third of the brand’s total sales. Things should lean further in this direction when a plug-in hybrid debuts later this year and an EV follows it in 2022.

No other details are available. Rumor has it that the hybrid is a next-gen NX model with Тойоты RAV4 Prime underpinnings, while the EV is a brand-new model based on a next-gen electric platform.

A few months ago, Lexus debuted its 4.9-meter-long LF-Z Electrified Concept – watch the video if you don’t remember. The car has 544 PS (536 hp / 400 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque at its disposal, which it can redirect to either one of the axles or both at once thanks to a drive system called Direct4. It reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill in 3 seconds and maxes out at 200 km/h (124 mph). Its 90-kWh battery supports 150kW charging and yields around 600 km (373 miles) of WLTP-rated range.
