Lotus’ first SUV to be all-electric

Lotus continues telling us small bits of information concerning its upcoming Lambda SUV. The car will apparently run on dual electric motors.

The entry spec will produce around 600 hp (450 kilowatts), while a higher spec will exceed 750 hp (560 kW). It is still too early to talk about sprint times, but it is perhaps worth mentioning that the Tesla Model X Performance hits 97 km/h (60 miles per hour) in as little as 2.6 seconds.

The estimated minimum range will amount to 580 kilometers, or 360 miles. The Model X Long Range can do marginally better, but the Performance spec needs recharging after 300 miles (480 kilometers) or so.

Lotus – which currently belongs to Geely – first came up with the Lambda SUV Concept four years ago. The car had originally been envisioned with a Volvo or Polestar hybrid powertrain under the hood, both property of Geely. The growing popularity of pure EVs prompted the company to reconsider the initial plan, however.

From the technological point of view, the Lotus Lambda will be based on the same SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) chassis as the Volvo XC60/XC90 and the Polestar 1. It will be around 4.9 meters (16.1 feet) long, 2 meters (6.5 feet) wide and 1.6 meters (5.25 feet) tall.

Lotus hopes that the SUV will become its best-seller on the United States and China markets, leading to the marque’s total sales growing from around 1,500 annual units to 5,000.
