Lotus will officially reveal its first crossover SUV on March 29, until which a few teasers is all we have. However, Autocar just discovered patent images uploaded to the Patent Bureau of Australia showing what looks like an aggressive and modern SUV with interesting c-pillar design.
Overall, the exterior resembles that of the recently introduced Lotus Emira: note especially the similar lighting and front fascia.
Other than that, the Lotus Type 132 (temporary name) boasts a sporty stance with sharply slanted c-pillars, a massive rear overhang and elaborately sculpted sides.
Active aerodynamic parts can be seen as well. These include hexagonal blinds that can open to improve cooling or close shut to fend off the incoming airflow.
Since the Type 132 is an EV, such measures may be necessary to extend its battery range. Autocar believes the model will ship with multiple powertrains to choose from, rated from 600 to 750 metric horsepower (592 – 740 hp; 441 – 552 kW). The flagship spec should be able to sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in three seconds or so.
The production will take place in China. Later on, Lotus plans to start assembling other electric vehicles there. An electric sports car co-designed with Alpine is set to go into production in Hethel, UK in four years’ time.
