Lotus unleashes a retro racecar named Type 66

At this year’s Monterey Car Week, British automaker Lotus introduced a retro-inspired racing car called Type 66, which it built using archived blueprints from half a century ago.

The model had been originally designed for participation in the 1970 Can-Am racing season, but was never finished in time for the tournament. Fast-forward fifty years, and the company has finally decided to see the project through to completion – albeit not without certain changes.

The car depicted here will be released in a batch of 10 units priced from a cool £1,000,000 each. It has a body built completely from carbon-fiber panels and wears an aerodynamic kit that directs most of the airflow straight through the car, rather than around it. Estimates show that it should generate up to 800 kilograms (1,760 pounds) of downforce at 240 km/h (149 mph).

The V8 under the hood has been redesigned from scratch and hits the wheels with 830 PS (819 hp / 610 kW) and 746 Nm (550 lb-ft) of torque through a racing-spec sequential transmission.
