The newest teaser video from Lucid indicates that the upcoming Air supercar might redefine standards for electric cars by offering whopping 442 miles (711 kilometers) of driving range on a single charge.
Since the Lucid Air Concept debut four years ago, the developer has released almost everything there was to know about the car, including its horsepower rating (1,013 PS / 1,000 HP / 745 kW), standard launch time (under 2.5 seconds), top speed (200+ mph / 322+ km/h), drag ratio (0.21), and battery capacity (130 kWh). The actual driving range remained vague at “400+ miles”. It seems like today, we are finally getting a specific number.
The news should make Elon Musk a bit nervous, because his longest-running Tesla Model S Long Range Plus only offers 402 miles (647 km) of uninterrupted driving under optimal conditions.
This would explain why a pre-production Lucid Air made 800+ miles (1,290+ km) across its home state California with only one charging in between. The test crew claims it moved along with the general traffic, sometimes accelerating t0 70 mph (110 km/h) and above.
The much-anticipated Tesla Cybertruck is said to have 805 kilometers (500 miles) of range under its belt, but it won’t be out until a few years more. There is also the Netherlands-developed hatchback EV Lightyear One, which covers 725 km (450 miles) according to the WLTP measurement standard and should go on sale next year.
The Lucid Air should celebrate its premiere on September 9, 2020 and enter production in the factory in Casa Grande, Arizona, USA. The First Edition will hit the market in 2021 priced close to $165,000 and packing the top-end drivetrain. The base spec will follow later with a $60,000 tag attached. Lucid also plans to sell the Air in select European and Middle East countries.
