There Can Only Be Two, Lucid says about EV market competition

Peter Rawlinson, CEO of the up-and-coming Lucid Motors startup, has shared his opinion on being a major Tesla rival. Apparently, he believes the electrification trend to be a “two horses’ race”, and thinks that technology will decide who the winner is.

With over 10,000 pre-orders collected for its luxury sedan, Air, Lucid looks to be in a good position to compete with Tesla. Individual customers made deposits of up to $7,000 USD, which is also a reassuring sign. But can Lucid really invade the car market like this and take it from the others by storm?

Rawlinson believes that it can. He emphasizes that he views ICE car manufacturers, not EV makers, as his greatest competitors. With this in mind, he intends to compete with the likes of Ford and General Motors first and foremost, and only then Tesla.

Interestingly enough, he refuses to call the current situation on the battery car market “a race of technological advancement”. Instead, he singles out Tesla as the undisputed tech leader and hopes that Lucid can become the second largest player in this market segment.

Peter Rawlinson was among the principal designers of the original Tesla Model S, as evidenced by numerous documents, but Elon Musk prefers not to mention the fact now that he broke off the company and founded his own one.

Lucid Motors showed the electric Air saloon in its full glory last fall – peek inside our gallery and watch the video to refresh those memories. In what seemed like a symmetrical response, Musk announced the Model S Plaid+, which had been envisioned as the longest-range EV on the market. It was canceled several days ago.
