The shortlist of the North American Car, Truck And Utility Vehicle Of The Year award has been announced at the ongoing Los Angeles Auto Show 2021 with 9 best cars spread across 3 categories. There is one EV in each, by the way.
The committee selected the leaders from light passenger cars, pickups and utility vehicles. The Lucid Air, the Honda Civic and the Volkswagen Golf GTI/R made it into the first category.
The second category conspicuously lacks frame-based ICE pickup trucks – the most popular kind by far. Instead, there is the compact unibody Ford Maverick, its main rival Hyundai Santa Cruz, and the battery-powered Rivian R1T.
Dominance in the SUV category is being decided between the body-on-frame Ford Bronco, the premium Genesis GV70, and the electric Ioniq 5.
Half a hundred of U.S. and Canadian journalists will determine the winners in a poll on December 30 – January 5. The leaders will be announced straight after the poll.
