Mahindra XUV900 to become India’s first coupe-SUV

Indian car manufacturer Mahindra unveiled its first coupe-like SUV prototype named the XUV Aero five years ago. It is now official that the car will debut in 2024 and enter production as the Mahindra XUV900.

Like the upcoming XUV700, the crossover will come powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol four-cylinder rated at 190 PS (187 hp / 140 kW) and a 2.2-liter turbo diesel good for 185 PS (182 hp / 136 kW). The six-speed manual and Aisin automatic transmissions will also stem from that model, but AWD is unlikely.

The recently founded Mahindra Advanced Design Europe (MADE) headquartered in West Midlands, UK, will probably co-design the XUV900 with famous coachbuilder Pininfarina, which also belongs to the Indian automotive corporation now.

The original concept car from 2016 (see the photos and the video) was sketched up by Mahindra Design based on the XUV500 SUV model. The company had originally intended to use that model’s powertrain as well, but while the show car caused considerable interest, the manufacturer never proceeded to producing it, believing it would not be able to sell even 2,000 units per month.

In other news, Indian automaker Tata Motors had to postpone the launch of its OMEGA-Arc based coupe-SUV named the H8 until better times.
