Suzuki has unveiled an updated version of its Baleno hatchback. Despite being advertised as the next generation, the car keeps its old platform and engine – but the body is all-new and the interior has been extensively modified.
Like before, the car is 3,990 mm long with 2,520 mm of wheelbase. The entire bodywork and lighting are different. Inside, novelty comes in the guise of a steering wheel, seats and a front panel with a touchscreen in the middle that you can obtain in 7- and 9-inch variants.
Rear seat occupants get a new bench to sit on and multiple USB slots to use. The standard trim spec includes a heads-up display, a premium audio system and all-around view cameras.
According to the company, the engine stays the same. This implies a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated mill rated at 90 PS (89 hp / 66 kW) and 113 Nm (83 lb-ft) of torque. For the transmission, buyers can choose between five-speed manual and five-speed single-clutch auto. The latter option comes to replace the old CVT.
The suspension bits are also stock, but Suzuki claims it tweaked things a bit more for comfort. The brakes are more capable than before, and new wheels measure 14 inches in diameter.
Production will begin at the Maruti Suzuki JSC in India. Later on, Maruti Suzuki will be exporting the new Baleno to select countries in Africa and South America. India will remain the key market for the model, though, considering that the first generation sold more than a million units there.
