Following the premieres of its first hybrid car, two V8-powered sedans and a supercar, Maserati still felt like showing us more new stuff. Meet Grecale, a compact-sized SUV named after a Mediterranean wind.
The car boasts sporty body outlines, a long hood, a sloped roof, a rear spoiler and short overhangs.
The Italian automaker names sportiness and utility the main qualities of the new model. As such, our earlier guess that it might be Levante’s smaller brother may be unfounded, after all. It seems plausible that the Grecale will stand on its own in the manufacturer’s range and on the market.
The SUV comes based on Giorgio, the RWD platform of the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio. This explains why we saw it testing in a Stelvio body earlier. Production will take place at the Cassino Assembly Plant in Cassino, Italy, where Alfa Romeo vehicles are pieced together.
The production-ready Maserati Grecale is set to premiere next spring. If the MC20 and the upcoming GranTurismo / GranCabrio are any indication, it will certainly get a purely electric version as well.
