Maserati spied testing a 1,200-PS electric supercar

Judging by these spy shots, Maserati has begun testing an electric GT prototype on the Nürburgring track. Motor1 believes it is a close-to-production GranTurismo Folgore supercar with up to 1,200 PS (1,184 hp / 883 kW) under its command.

Despite the cladding, it is obvious that the exterior of the car is evolutionary, rather than revolutionary. Overall, it looks just like the GranTurismo model sent to retirement a while ago.

Some of the more interesting traits seen here include a large “radiator” grille and a hood with fake air intakes. Neither is necessary for an EV. This might mean that the manufacturer wants to launch a petrol version of the car as well, possibly powered by the same engine as the MC20, but all specifics remain to be confirmed.

Power-wise, the GT Folgore is expected to pack three electric motors jointly rated at 1,200 metric horsepower, as mentioned above. This should enable it to sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in around three seconds and exceed 300 km/h (186 mph) in a straight line. Low center of gravity should help it stay maneuverable and responsive at top accelerations.

The Italian company intends to approach electrification gradually. In addition to coupes, its EV lineup will eventually include a sedan and a couple of crossover SUVs. The coupe is expected to be the first to reach the market in 2023.
