Maserati has found a valid way to get us excited several months ahead of premiering its affordable crossover SUV, the Grecale: the trident logo you see here is over 100 meters (328+ feet) long and made up from as many as 80 pilot-batch cars.
The official premiere is expected in the spring of 2022, although it is not guaranteed. When Maserati posted the first shots of the car in May this year, it had planned to begin production in a few weeks’ time, but had to take some time out to iron out some issues. Market observers believe that chip shortage was the biggest reason for the delay, as the Grecale is a comparatively tech-intensive car.
Anyway, the Italian automaker has over 200 Grecale prototypes ready at the time, running pre-production tests in Italy, China, UAE, North America, and Finland. When the car finally arrives, it will face most of its competition from the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the Porsche Macan.
Powertrain specs may be too early to talk about, but the company uses a limited range of engines, so educated guesses can still be made. In all likelihood, the entry spec will made do with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mill rated at 280 PS (276 hp / 206 kW) or lower. The Trofeo top spec may use either the turbo six-banger of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio good for 500 PS (493 hp / 368 kW) or even the new 3.0-liter V6 of the Maserati MC20, which is capable of 620 PS (611 hp / 456 kW).
