Maserati sheds light on its Nettuno engine

The Italian carmaker claims that just because the 3.0-liter Nettuno V6 was developed specifically for the MC20 sports car does not mean its technology cannot be reused in many other future cars (and it will be).

Each power unit is manually assembled in the company’s own lab center in Modena, Italy. It produces 621 PS (612 hp / 457 kW) and 790 Nm (583 lb-ft) of torque. When it was announced, many had assumed that it would later find use in the company’s other cars, but Maserati Chief Engineer Matteo Valentini said it would not.

“The Nettuno was built for the MC20 alone, but its tech will find use in many other vehicles later on,” he said.

This tech includes double combustion, among other things. Each cylinder has an additional antechamber with its own spark plug and a dual direct injection system. The fuel can therefore be fed into two chambers at once, but ignited separately thanks to twice the usual spark plug count.
