Maserati will attend The Quail show during the annual Monterey Car Week on August 18 with a 730-PS supercar called MCXtrema. The announcement is accompanied by a single teaser that seemingly doesn’t even depict the car. That said, we saw it a year ago.
MCXtrema will be the production name of a vehicle previously known as ‘Project24’. It is essentially a track-focused modification of the MC20 coupe (see video). Rather than designing it to be compatible with specific racing regulations, though, Maserati plans to organize single-make races and other special events on dedicated tracks for MCXtrema owners.
Compared to the street-legal car it is based in, the racer will benefit from a more streamlined body and an impressive aero kit including an adjustable front splitter and a rear wing. It will also get new headlights, exhaust system, 18-inch centerlock wheels, and slick tires.
The output of the V6 Nettuno under the hood will go up 100 PS (99 hp / 74 kW), just a little bit less than the 110 PS the company promised us earlier. A six-speed sequential transmission will take the place of the eight-speed DCT, which will deliver the momentum to the rear wheels. Other than that, a diff lock, adjustable suspension and Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes will be included in the base spec.
Last but not least, the MCXtrema will weigh around 250 kg (550 pounds) less than the MC20, largely thanks to a stripped cabin with a single driver’s seat. A six-point safety harness will be included by default, but a passenger seat will be a paid option. Other highlights in the cabin include a multi-function steering wheel made from carbon fiber with an LCD in the middle, an FIA-compliant roll cage, and a fire extinguisher.
Only 62 units will be made, and the entire batch has already been sold out in pre-orders. All pricing remains secret.
