Maserati has posted some impressive footage from the track tests of its MC20-based supercar, the MCXtrema. It debuted in last August, but the pre-production tests are apparently not over yet.
The shipments are set to begin this summer, but in the meantime, let’s take a look at the demo video shot at the Varano de’ Melegari racetrack in Italy. The car was piloted by FIA GT1 champion and the automaker’s official test driver Andre Bertolini. Pouring rain added a whole lot of difficulty to the tests.
Despite running on the MC20 chassis, the MCXtrema is not road-legal. It is a pure racecar outfitted with a special carbon-fiber body aerodynamically optimized for racing requirements. It packs the same V6 Nettuno as its donor, but with a plethora of modifications. Among other things, the engine churns out 740 PS (730 hp / 544 kW), considerably more than the standard 630 PS (621 hp / 463 kW).
The Italian company plans to limit the production to 62 units. Rumor has it all 62 had been sold out via pre-orders even before the official reveal event. The prices were never mentioned, but different sources put them within the range of U.S. $1.5–3 million.
