New Maserati Quattroporte aims for Porsche Taycan laurels

Maserati has confirmed the intention to reveal the next generation of its luxurious Quattroporte saloon next year. According to company CEO Davide Grasso, the newcomer will be sized smaller than its predecessor (shown here) and will be replacing both the current generation and the smaller Ghibli sedan.

He added that the car will receive a ‘groundbreaking’ new design and impressive technical specifications, leading the media to speculate that its ultimate goal may be to rival the formidable Porsche Taycan EV.

We suppose that the car will end up with a sleeker ‘four-door coupe’ design based on the STLA Large platform developed by Stellantis. It will also be the company’s first production vehicle without an internal combustion engine.

According to Grasso, the appearance will be largely dictated by the electric nature of the car. He did not venture into any further detail here, but we suspect that ensuring maximum aerodynamic performance is going to be a priority. He did say that it would be decorated with national motifs and offer more interior luxury than ever, which is in line with Maserati’s recent decision to move upmarket.

For the powertrain, out best guess is that the new Quattroporte will run on the same tech as the upcoming Alfa Romeo Giulia EV. An earlier leak suggested that the Italian automaker was planning to launch the Giulia top spec with two electric motors delivering around 1,000 horsepower (750 kilowatts) to the wheels. The Quattroporte might receive a similar powertrain in the flagship Trofeo version.

Whichever proves to be the actual case, the new Quattroporte will mark a significant milestone in the company’s transition to full-electric power, set to be complete by the start of the next decade.
