Reports: Maserati pauses the development of Quattroporte successor

Maserati plans to postpone the sales start of its all-electric sedan set to replace the Quattroporte (shown here). The news comes from Corriere Torino citing the automaker’s e-mails to the dealerships. The specific date remains undecided.

In its letter, the company notifies its industrial partners about putting a ‘Project M9S’ on hold for the time being and asks them to pause their own EV component production. The message ends with a promise to share more information as soon as it becomes available.

Corriere Torino believes that the delay could be caused by the need to narrow down the exact correlation between Maserati and Alfa Romeo brands on the market. Both currently belong to Stellantis and may end up facing harmful competition from each other unless they coordinate their EV releases.

Specifically, Alfa Romeo plans on launching the next Giulia generation sometime in mid-2020s, giving the sedan up to 1,014 PS (1,000 hp / 747 kW) in its range-topping trims. As it happens, Maserati had voiced the same exact plans before. It may now want to reconsider its release strategy to put some distance between the Quattroporte successor and the Giulia.

According to the company’s original roadmap, the EV was scheduled for premiere sometime in 2024 and sales launch a year after that. If the reports are true, though, its fate may be hanging in the air.
