The Japanese carmaker is currently conducting a series of drive tests of its upcoming battery EV using the CX-30 crossover SUV-based mule.
According to an official press release, the new SUV will pack a single electric motor rated at 150 hp (112 kW) and a 35.5 kWh battery. A special version will also be made available with a modest-sized gas engine acting purely as a power generator for extra electric range.
Allegedly, the car is being designed from scratch and will have no ‘sibling’ models in the current Mazda lineup. Once it hits the market, it is going to have to fight for customer attention against the Kia Niro, among other contenders.
The international premiere is scheduled for the Tokyo Motor Show show coming up in October 2019. Whether we will be seeing a production-ready sample or a prototype remains unannounced. Availability dates and pricing remain likewise unknown.
