If Mazda ever produces a car with a Wankel engine driving the wheels again, it will not be anytime soon. In the meantime, a rather impressive 1970 Cosmo Series II Coupe is underway to a Mecum sale. Fancy a glimpse?
The Series II is essentially just a slightly redesigned and better-powered Series I, which you can see in the attached video. The Series I was Mazda’s first Wankel car in history.
The Cosmo going on sale looks every bit as good as it did fifty years ago thanks to a restoration it went through two decades ago. There are no rust specks or signs of damage on its body to speak of.
The interior, while also quite well-preserved for its age, shows a fair amount of wear. The equipment notably includes an AC, a real rarity for the 70s, and the odometer displays mere 35,034 miles (56,382 km).
The rotary engine under the hood produces 128 PS (126 hp / 94 kW) and 140 Nm (103 lb-ft) of torque, which a five-speed manual gearbox sends through to the rear wheels.
