Mazda works on a high-pressure, eco-friendly gasoline engine

The Japanese car manufacturer Mazda is actively exploring the opportunity of creating high-pressure gasoline-powered engines to rival electric motors in terms of environmental safety. This is how it’s supposed to work.

According to Mitsuo Hitomi, Managing Executive Officer of Mazda and the leader of the project, all secondary engine energy that would otherwise dissipate as heat may be redirected to fulfil other important functions in the car. He refused to provide any kind of ETA for the mass-produced version.

Right now, the most advanced Mazda motors are those belonging to the Skyactiv-X series. Unlike their regular, spark-plug ignited counterparts, they are compression-ignited – just like diesel ones. Creators of the technology claim they come with 30 percent better fuel efficiency.

Mazda has also devised an original way to advertise their latest research efforts. The scientists calculated the emissions of a generic gas engine and compared those to the emissions produced by the factories that manufacture all-electric car batteries. It turned out that some “green” e-cars actually damage the environment more when they are created than regular gasoline-driven vehicles during their entire lifetime.
