Mazda announces a quintet of C-SUVs

Mazda has unveiled the plans to expand its off-roader lineup with the introduction of as many as five crossover SUVs in the coming two years. The cars will be based on two main platforms and will not be replacing any of the existing models.

The CX-50 will be the first to hit the showrooms in early 2022, becoming a staple model along with the Mazda 3 and CX-30. The production will take place at the Toyota-Mazda joint enterprise in Alabama, USA. No technical specifications have been revealed at the time.

Europe and Japan will get the larger CX-60 and CX-80 models, the latter a three-row SUV. It looks like both could be based on the company’s new RWD architecture with longitudinal engine layout. It is official that both models will be available with inline-six engines (petrol and diesel) assisted by 48V starter-generators, and also as full-fledged PHEVs with a four-cylinder engine plus an electric motor.

The lineup will be different in North America, which will receive a CX-70 and CX-90. Both will be larger (and even wider) than their European cousins and powered by different engines (probably higher-end ones). There will be no diesels.

The latest Mazda CX-5, which received its facelift last month and can be found in our photo gallery here, will continue to get updates, and is expected to stay on sale for a while.
