Mazda СX-5 to get two new engines

The current U.S. version of the Mazda CX-5 only ships with a 2.5-liter, naturally-aspirated engine which can deactivate half of its cylinders. According to the latest announcement, vehicles equipped with new 2.2L diesel and 2.5L gasoline turbo engines will arrive in the showrooms before the end of the year.

Frankly speaking, Mazda seems a bit late to the show with this release. As a renowned manufacturer of turbocharged engines with the first release dating as far back as 1983, it really had everything it needed to ship the series with a turbo engine or two. Its iconic RX-7 supercar also came turbocharged, as do the modern Mazda СX-9 and Mazda 6.

Speaking of the Mazda CX5, it will most likely be getting the well-known Skyactiv-G 2.5T engine with 254 hp (189 kW) and 420 Nm (310 lb·ft) of torque, rather than a brand-new one. As usual, the figures may change slightly towards the release.

On the whole, Mazda СX-5 sales in the USA leave much to be desired right now. Only a little more than 127,500 vehicles were sold in 2017, which hardly compares to Toyota RAV4’s 407,600 or Nissan Rogue’s 403,460.
