Mazda CX-50 spawns a hybrid version in the USA

Mazda has updated its U.S.-spec CX-50 for the next model year, introducing a new quad-motor hybrid version. It costs just $4,000 more than the entry-level SUV with a naturally aspirated powertrain.

The new hybrid spec combines a 2.5-liter non-turbo engine with three electric motors in an AWD setup with a small battery pack and a CVT for transmission. All parts stem from Toyota, but Mazda claims it has recalibrated them for optimal performance.

Outfitted like this, the new CX-50 sends 219 PS (216 hp / 161 kW) to the wheels and consumes around 6 liters of gas per 100 km. This translates to 39 miles per gallon and is roughly 40% better than the ICE version can do. Mazda reckons that the owners will be able to save up to $575 on fuel costs per year.

Other than that, the new hybrid looks almost indistinguishable from a normal CX-50, unless you notice a mildly different front bumper and new 17- and 19-inch wheels. The interior gets a red leather trim option, and that’s about it.

Sales in the USA will begin later this year from the minimum price of $33,970.
