Mazda reveals interesting specifics about its upcoming six-cylinder engines

Mazda has developed new inline-six engines for its CX-60 SUV. Citing official sources, Motor1.com claims both units will benefit from numerous technological innovations thanks to which their fuel economy will not worsen at all despite larger displacement.

The e-Skyactiv-X 3.0 comes with a patented fuel-air mix combustion method that requires the mix to be rather sparse and depleted of fuel. This approach saves gasoline while still providing adequate amounts of power without any kind of forced induction. Precise numbers will be revealed later.

In turn, the e-Skyactiv-D 3.3 gets reshaped combustion chambers that ensure a more complete combustion of fuel and reduce emissions, chiefly at high RPM counts. Despite being physically larger, the engine weighs about the same as the old 2.2-liter unit it replaces. Once again, power and torque remain to be disclosed.

M Hybrid Boost, a 48-volt mild-hybrid electric add-on, will support both engines. The eight-speed automatic transmission is also new and lacks the usual hydraulic torque converter. Instead, the new design relies on a multi-plate clutch. Mazda claims the new gearbox is smaller, which enabled engineers to free up some legroom for the driver.

Just when the new Mazda CX-60 (shown in our gallery here) may debut with these engines is still unclear.
