Mazda 2 facelift debuts in Japan, loses ‘Demio’ suffix

The fourth generation of the Mazda 2 compact urban hatchback has been in production since 2014 and has gone through a minor refresh in 2016. Another facelift debuted just a few days ago, and the changes are much more pronounced this time around.

For one, the Number Two now looks much more like the Number Six and the CX-5. For another, it no longer has the ‘Demio’ suffix in its name.

The equipment has seen considerable improvements. You can now opt for adaptive LED headlights and a new 1.5-liter gasoline engine manufacturer-rated at 110 hp (82 kW) and 141 Nm (104 lb-ft) of torque. Previously, the car only shipped with a 1.5-liter diesel unit capable of 105 hp (78 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque.

If you want AWD, you can have it with either of the two engines, but the transmission will then have to be six-speed automatic. The manual gearbox is only available in the FWD version of the car.

The cabin now features better noise proofing and houses a sophisticated driver’s seat with six power adjustments and memory function. The new 7-inch multimedia system is compatible with the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The cruise control system has been reworked to automatically continue moving after a full stop, and a lane control feature has been added.

Mazda is already accepting pre-orders, and the launch is scheduled for September 12.
