We have been hearing about Mazda developing a new rear-wheel drive platform and six-cylinder engines for a while now, and the latest portion of leaked data seems to confirm this.
Multiple sources are reporting that both features will be implemented in the fourth generation of the Mazda 6. Apparently, the new chassis supports longitudinal engine mounting and therefore lends itself well to high-performance drivetrains.
It is reported that the new 6 will ship with a choice between a supercharged Skyactiv-X (gasoline), a turbocharged Skyactiv-D (diesel), and a mild-hybrid system based on a 48V electric motor. The range-topping version will produce 350 hp (261 kW), and AWD should be available as an option.
If proven true, these specs should help Mazda enter the premium segment of the market. We will likely not know for sure until 2022 or so, which is when the new Mazda 6 should finally come into the spotlight. Its design remains likewise unknown, but the 2017 Mazda Vision Coupe shown here should provide a good starting point.
