According to Motor1 citing a representative of Mazda, the company will be bringing the rotary engine back for its MX-30 REX (range-extender hybrid) lineup.
The automaker, whose fiscal year ends on March 31, says the production will begin in the second half of fiscal year 2022. It remains uncertain which countries the car will be available in, but it is definitely going to debut in North America.
As a range extender, the car will not use its Wankel engine to drive the wheels. Instead, it will run on electric power and only fire up the engine to generate more power for the main motor. Reports from early 2021 said Mazda was looking into doubling the range in its next REX model, which meant reaching 400 km (250 miles).
