Mazda unveils a new rotary engine, considers putting it into a sports car

This Mazda rotary engine is a prototype that the company may eventually start using in sports cars. Don’t get your hopes too high up, though: even if it does reach the market, it is envisioned exclusively as a range-extender powering an electric system.

Unlike the engine used in the latest MX-30 hybrid, this one is divided in two sections. Modest size and displacement volume lets it keep the gravity center of the car low while reducing emissions and vibrations. On the downside, it’s already official that there will be no mechanical coupling between the engine and the wheels – it will serve only as a power generator for an unspecified number of electric motors.

Other than this, the details are scarce. Mazda’s latest concept that it confirmed wanting to mass-produce was the Iconic SP (see video). As such, if the car ever gets a production run, it may be released as a serial hybrid with this Wankel engine.
