This Mazda MX-5 hides a 342-PS surprise in the engine bay

The Mazda MX-5, also known as the Miata Roadster, is the go-to car for enthusiasts interested in perfect per-axle distribution of weight and effortless fast cornering. This particular example traded its engine for a much bulkier V8, but the seller claims it is in no way less dynamic for the fact.

The engine in question is an LS1 mill made by General Motors with 5.7 liters of displacement. A number of modifications enable it to hit the dyno with 342 PS (337 hp / 252 kW) and 489 Nm (361 lb-ft) of torque. For a car tipping the scales at 1,065 kg (2,348 pounds), this is more than enough power and torque.

An impressive number of other tweaks have been made to keep the build stable and drivable on a daily basis. Replacements included the cold air intake system, the radiator, the fuel pump and the entire exhaust system, just to name a few. A Tremec six-speed manual carries the torque to the wheels.

And if you were wondering about the load balance, the seller claims the weight is now 53.4 percent on the front axle and 46.6 percent on the rear one. The stock car had a ratio of 52:48 – barely any different, to be frank. And the weight difference is quoted as 180 pounds, which translates into 81 kilograms – imagine taking one adult passenger with you for a ride.

Overall, this does look like an impressive swap. Car and Driver does not mention any pricing, though.
