Mazda has followed the example of other Japanese automakers by revealing its Japan Mobility Show lineup for this year. At the show – which opens in Tokyo on October 26 – the company will showcase assorted MX-5 specials along with a mysterious concept car. It sounds like a continuation for the iconic roadster, which is already nine years old and in need for a major do-over.
Mazda says nothing about the car itself. The only image available so far shows dual-ring taillight patterns, illuminated ‘Mazda’ lettering and the outlines of a rear bumper with a brake light in the middle. The rest – even the body style – is unknown.
According to the official announcement, the new car ‘follows the theme of the auto show’. This sounds just as vague as the teaser looks, but, considering that the company plans to exhibit the different MX-5 versions at the JMS-2023, a sports car sounds the most likely.
Aside from this enigmatic concept, Mazda’s show lineup will include a first-gen MX-5 modded to symbolize the marque’s dedication to maximizing driving enjoyment. There will also be a 2024MY facelift version of the roadster, as well as a specially adapted manual version for people with disabilities.
Nearly a year ago, Mazda unveiled a virtual concept called Vision Study – you will find it in the rest of the gallery and the video below. The teased concept has similar-looking taillights, so the two could be related.
