Mazda to make parts for old RX-7 rotary sports cars

Owners of the RX-7 coupe series may currently order any of the 91 available replacement parts for their Wankel powertrains.

The catalog lists around three dozen parts for the second generation (FC, 1985 – 1992) and around five dozen for the third one (FD, 1991 – 2002). More parts will be added later, and the company says around 24,000 such cars in Japan alone may benefit from the continuation program. Other markets may also benefit from it in the future.

The FC RX-7 came equipped with a 1.3-liter Wankel engine rated between 150 and 200 hp (110 – 148 kW). The FD generation raised the bar to 255 – 280 hp (188 – 206 kW). Both offered a choice between five-speed manual and four-speed auto, and sent the momentum to the rear wheel.

The continuation program is part of a larger one called Roadster Restore, which began three years ago. Mazda MX-5 (NA) owners in Japan could originally avail themselves to around 150 replacement parts, and their number has since grown to 1,100 parts. The company even offers full restoration services to those willing to pay for it.
