Check out a quad-rotor Mazda RX-7 hitting the dyno stand with 1,161 PS

U.S. tuner Rob Dahm had spent six years perfecting his unique Mazda RX-7 build with four rotors instead of the usual two. He showcased the result at the last year’s SEMA show and has now followed up with some dyno test footage. Let’s just say the powertrain exceeded all expectations.

Dahm started the testing with the boost pressure as low as 10 psi (0.69 bar), but gradually proceeded to raise it to the nominal 35 psi (2.41 bar). The Wankel engine responded with slamming the four wheels with 1,161 PS (1,145 hp / 854 kW) and 1,254 Nm (925 lb-ft) of torque.

You may remember that the RX-7 is rear-wheel-drive by design, but the tuner had an AWD system transplanted into it from a Nissan GT-R to ensure that none of the power goes wasted.

As for the source of inspiration for the project, we would imagine the quad-rotor Mazda 787B racecar to be it. That one won a 24 Hours of Le Mans back in its time, but while it could theoretically output 900 PS (888 hp / 662 kW), the actual power was clamped at 700 PS (690 hp / 515 kW) for the duration of the race.
