Watch a six-rotor, sequential-box Mazda RX-7 dominate the track

How many Wankel engine rotors is enough? The answer is subjective, because there is no strict design-imposed limit, but most engineers don’t go past three or four to keep the maintenance expenses in check. The owner of this Mazda RX-7 installed six, and you absolutely have to listen to the result.

Responsible for the project is Humpries Steel & Performance, a tuning company based off New Zealand. The block itself was assembled at Pulse Performance by cobbling together three 13B twin-rotor units. The resulting engine is a whole meter (40 inches!) long and comes equipped with custom-fabricated intake and exhaust, fuel system, injection, dry sump and electronics. The person who ordered it handed over the equivalent of U.S. $71,000 – just for the engine, never mind the rest of the car.

Meanwhile, the rest is equally impressive – the chassis and suspension are all-new, and there are Wilwood performance brakes at all four corners. A six-speed sequential transmission carries the torque to the wheels. We don’t know exactly how much there is, but you would be doing yourself a service watching the video – you don’t see or hear such insane cars every day.
