Drunken driving a McLaren 720S likely to cost the man who rented it 70,000+ USD

McLaren supercars have been having a bit of a hard time lately. Mere days ago, we reported on a 650S totaled by a rogue truck tire; now, another report comes in saying a rental 720S got hit for nearly U.S. $70,000 worth of repairs – and this might not even be the worst part for the hapless driver.

Anyway, what is your idea of dolce vita? Supposing you were rich, coming to Las-Vegas to unwind, renting a neat McLaren – what would be the one thing you absolutely must NOT do? Drink and drive, you nailed it. The alleged culprit of this accident did not heed the wisdom, unfortunately.

Lamely enough, the man plowed into another car in a parking lot, ending up with a crumpled fender, a torn-off side mirror, and a deep scratch. The rental company assessed the most immediate damages from the incident at $69,000 – and this only includes the replacement parts. Neither the installation nor the painting costs have been assessed yet.

Another sad aspect of this story is that the rental company will now have to spend at least three months waiting for the parts to arrive and then restoring the car, during which it will miss substantial rental profits. The insurance may cover these ‘expectation damages’, but whether it will and to what extent remains to be seen.

As for the driver, the man is in bad trouble now. As if the repair bills weren’t bad enough, the owner of the struck car now also says they will demand compensation.
