McLaren unveils the long-tailed 765LT

Have you noticed how all the recent car-related rumors have ended up being factually correct lately? Well, enter yet another one: the McLaren 765LT, based off the 720S, just as predicted.

The supercar occupies the ‘mid-range’ Super Series and boasts a Longtail body design. Its four-liter V8 churns out 765 hp (570 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) instead of just 720 hp (530 kW) and 700 Nm (568 lb-ft) of the 720S it is based upon. This translates into 623 mechanical horsepower per metric ton of weight, which the British carmaker claims is the highest value in its class.

The coupe needs only 2.8 seconds to sprint 0-100 km/h (720S: 2.9 s), another 7.2 s to get to 200 km/h (7.8 s), and less than 10 seconds to cover a quarter of a mile (10.3 s). Curiously enough, the top speed dropped from 341 km/h (212 mph) to 330 km/h (205 mph). The front wheel span gained 6 mm (0.2”), and the road clearance lost 5 mm (0.18”).

One of the main highlights of the McLaren 765LT comes in the shape of a brand-new aerodynamic kit that is said to generate 25% more downforce than the one on the 720S. Included are carbon-fiber bumpers, front splitter, rear diffuser, side sills and an active rear wing. The exhaust system is made of titanium, the forged wheels boast a lightweight design, and the tires are Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R. Add to this the carbon-ceramic brake system taken straight off the McLaren Senna hypercar line and the upgraded suspension complete with new, high-end springs and shocks, and you’ve got a formidable track projectile. The HVAC and the audio system are missing from the default spec, but you can always pay to have them included. MSO Clubsport and MSO Clubsport Pro are both available as well.

The production run will be kept down to just 765 units, and the pre-order books are already open, even though the pricing remains unannounced. Later on, the British automaker may as well launch a 765LT Roadster spin-off, like it did with other Longtail models in the past.
