McLaren unveils the Artura, a $225k hypercar

When the McLaren P1 hit the market in a limited run of just 375 units in 2013–2015, it cost more than $1,000,000 USD. The new Artura is nearly as powerful for a fraction of the price.

The newcomer uses a twin-turbocharged V6 rated at 585 PS (577 hp / 430 kW) and 584 Nm (431 lb-t) of torque. It comes with an eight-speed DCT box that contains an electric motor. The total output amounts to 680 PS (671 hp / 500 kW) and 809 Nm (597 lb-ft), enabling the hypercar to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in three seconds flat and max out at 329 km/h (204 mph).

To put things into perspective, the P1 had 916 PS (903 hp / 674 kW) at the crank and needed 2.8 seconds to launch. Both the P1 and the Artura have 31 kilometers (19.3 miles) of all-electric driving range courtesy of a rechargeable 7.4-kWh battery. Using an EVSE-compatible charger replenishes 80% of the charge in 2.5 hours.

The car comes based on a new hybrid vehicle platform known as the MCLA. The company uses generous amounts of carbon fiber and aluminum to compensate for the electrified powertrain weight. The result is a superhybrid that weighs as little as 1.5 metric tons (3,300 lbs). The electric system alone weighs 130 kg (286 lbs), the battery 88 kg (194 lbs), and the V6 engine 160 kg (353 lbs). McLaren’s signature V8 mill is roughly 50 kg (110 lbs) heavier than that.

Features include adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane control, automatic high beam, and OTA updates. The second-gen MIS infotainment has a high-definition display and supports Android Auto along with Apple CarPlay. A track-focused telemetry system is also on board.

Prices in the USA begin at $225,000. Customers can choose from three trim levels named Performance, TechLux, and Vision.
