McLaren sheds some more light on the Artura hybrid

The McLaren Artura has been available to pre-order for three months now, but the company still hasn’t revealed it in full detail.

The model pioneers McLaren’ HPH (High-Performance Hybrid) range and packs a state-of-the-art V6 with three liters of displacement and dual turbochargers mounted in the V. The engine has been designed from scratch for part-electric powertrains supported by the MCLA platform.

The new unit weighs around 50 kilos (110 lbs) less than the old one did, is 4 cm (1.6”) less tall and 19 cm (7.43”) shorter than the old V8 while offering a better power-to-weight ratio than all McLaren V8s of the past, excluding only the Senna and Elva. Its modest dimensions enable especially efficient cooling to be implemented.

The electric motor integrated into the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission is also lightweight, compact and torquey. Weighing in at 15.4 kg (34 lbs), it produces 225 Nm (166 lb-ft) of torque. The electric motor of the McLaren P1 is slightly ahead with its 260 Nm (192 lb-ft), but the advantage is offset by its sheer weight of 38 kg (84 lbs).

Other highlights include a straight-pipe exhaust system, state-of-the-art multi-link suspension in the back, a lightweight electronic differential, and particularly precise tire pressure and temperature sensors.

680 metric horsepower (671 hp / 500 kW) enables the Artura to sprint 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in three seconds flat and max out at 330 km/h (205 mph). Its battery power is enough to cover 30 kilometers (18 miles) on electricity alone. Prices in the UK begin from £185,500.
