Rare McLaren Elva Spider bid to $1.6M and counting

An exotic McLaren Elva lacking any kind of windshield or top is currently being traded at U.S. $1,625,000 with a few days still left on the auction clock. The car is pristine with around 60 km (37 miles) on the odo and belongs to a series of 149 units, although the seller says only around 30 received this trim combo.

The original Elva (see video) debuted four years ago on the Senna coupe chassis. It had a distinct appearance dictated by its new body type and was originally produced without any kind of windshield whatsoever. To compensate, the manufacturer implemented a sophisticated structure called Active Air Management System to divert the airflow around the cabin. Later production cars did get a windshield as an afterthought, but McLaren chose not to expand its original production batch of 149 units. The example on sale has the AAMS installed and no front glass.

Power comes from a 4.0-liter V8 rated at 815 PS (804 hp / 600 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission drives the rear wheels, taking the Spider from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under three seconds.

This example was specified with an optional Dove Grey paint coat and carbon-fiber décor all around, as well as a blue interior. It also ended up with staggered forged rims installed in 19 inches front and 20 rear, and carbon-ceramic brakes with blue calipers.

Due to the sheer number of costly factory options installed, the original owner paid the equivalent of U.S. $1,789,572 for the vehicle.
