Replacing a McLaren F1 windshield costs the same as a new VW Golf

At a recent Velocity Invitational classic racing event on the Sonoma Raceway in California, two McLaren F1 supercars had their windshields damaged. Motor1 found out how expensive the repairs would be.

The legendary F1 model (see the gallery and the video here) left the assembly lines a quarter of a century ago. Out of the 106 total units produced, only 62 were street-legal. Fortunately for the owners, the Woking-based company still stocks up on supplies, so at least they won’t have to wait for new windshields to be fabricated.

However, the part isn’t exactly cheap: it costs the equivalent of U.S. $25,000, plus another $8,000 for installation. The total – $33,000, or roughly €30,000 – buys you a new base-trim Volkswagen Golf in Europe.

According to Motor1, McLaren Special Operations plans to restart its windshield production before it runs out of stock, so it looks like the F1 owners can keep breaking theirs to their hearts’ content. The company has recently re-launched the production of fuel tanks and wheels for this particular model as well.
