The hybrid-powered McLaren P1 (featured in our gallery) came in 2013-2015 in a run of just 375 units. Now, the company revealed that it had already begun working on its successor, scheduled to appear in the Ultimate Series in 2024.
The corresponding statement was made by Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren. He pointed out that he often drives electric cars and likes them, but would still prefer the next-gen P1 to go hybrid, rather than all-electric. He gave the 765LT as an example: many owners regularly hit the racetrack on their battery supercar only to discover that they get half an hour’s worth of driving followed by a whole day of charging, which is unacceptable.
Preliminary estimations say that the new P1 will get a single electric motor for its front axle and a brand-new V6 for the rear one. The same V6 will soon debut on the company’s newest addition to the entry-level Sports Series.
Flewitt added that the company was considering offering a fully electric P1 as an option in some markets.
