Car companies Nyobolt and Callum have joined efforts to release a one-off tech demo vehicle, the Nyobolt EV. It is a small and sporty-looking coupe with a traction battery you can refill in mere six minutes.
If you found it looking suspiciously like the classic Lotus Elise, that’s no coincidence. Callum employs Julian Thomson, ex-Lotus designer. But the emphasis of the project is not on the exterior, but on the battery.
The pack holds comparatively little electricity – just 35 kilowatt-hours – but still gives you around 250 km (155 miles) of range. The important thing is that it plugs into any fast-charge terminal and restores the charge in six minutes or less. Per the project team, such batteries will soon evolve enough to warrant their use in all kinds of commercial transports and full-size EVs.
