Mercedes applies for O-Class registration

Mercedes-Benz has submitted an application with the European Patent Office, seeking to acquire rights for the trademarks “O 200”, “O 180”, “O 140”, and “O 120”. The company plans to use these designations for various types of drivetrains and vehicles.

What we are dealing with here is most likely a new range of vehicles called the Mercedes O-Class. In all probability, the new family will consist of compact passenger vans primarily intended for use in ride sharing services. Then again, there is no clear indication at that in the patent description, and there is a fair chance that the company doesn’t intend to introduce the O-Class anytime soon.

Incidentally, Daimler AG already has an “O” model in its lineup. The Mercedes-Benz Citaro bus has the internal model designation that reads “O530”. On the other hand, the patent claim clearly states that there is a space between the letter “O” and the numeric index, so the O530 might as well be unrelated.
